2 Timothy 3:16-17 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
What does ‘inspired’ mean to you? Since all scripture is inspired by God it’s important that we understand what separates the Bible from other books written about God.

Profitable of course means to ‘generate an outcome that is advantageous’. Usually this means financial, but not always. Sometimes we can profit by gaining knowledge, or friendship, or experience. So knowing that all of scripture can generate an outcome where we gain knowledge or experience or friendship or some other situation that results in our gain helps us see the importance of interacting with that scripture on a regular basis.

What have you gained from scripture that has helped you teach, or correct, or train those around you who depend on you?

If we need scripture to become complete (vs 17) in what ways can you increase your time spent working with scripture towards that completeness? More time reading? A more regular reading schedule? More time spent THINKING about what you’ve read?

Do you have a regular place/routine that you use for reading your Bible?

Romans 10:17 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.

Think of all the things each of us heard as children and believed. Santa Claus. Chocolate milk coming from brown cows. A watermelon could grow inside you if you swallowed a watermelon seed. Stepping on a crack could break your mothers back.

As children we don’t have a real grasp of how the world works, so it was easy for us to be convinced of things that we now know are impossible.

In the same way, when we were newly saved believers we might have believed things that weren’t entirely true, but as we matured we learned to look for truth in the Bible, and to ignore some of the things that our culture claims about God. (Cleanliness is next to Godliness, God won’t give you more than you can handle, when one door closes another opens).

Since our faith comes from what is heard about Christ from the Bible, who do you rely on, so you know you’re HEARING things about God?

How do you know they are TRUE things that you’re hearing?

How can you ensure that the things you say about God are completely true?

And finally, what is one passage in scripture that revealed truth to you? If one doesn’t immediately spring to mind where do you think you should start to find something that will reveal truth that can affect your life right NOW in 2020?

Joshua 1:8 Christian Standard Bible (CSB)
This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.

Instruction is another word for ‘teaching’ and a good teacher does much more than just recite and enforce rules. A good teacher provides examples to enhance their lessons, and listens to the questions their students pose.

The Bible is meant to be much more than just a list of things to do and things not to do. It is filled with examples of the human race being blessed when they do things God’s way, and finding grace when they stray away from His teachings and do it their own way.

God can use this book to enhance and fill in the areas of your life where you are unsure of your faith, or your understanding, or anywhere else you’re struggling. TALK TO HIM.

Take your questions to Him in prayer….don’t expect fast and easy answers, but pray with the expectation that He hears you, He knows you, He loves you, and HE WILL ANSWER.

What are some examples of times He has answered you?

What are some questions you have for Him?

Ephesians 5:6-14A

Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God’s wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things.[b] Therefore, do not become their partners. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— for the fruit of the light[c] results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 discerning what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made clear, 14 for what makes everything clear is

How has redemption made you a light before others?

What areas of “fruitless works of darkness” do you need to expose around you?

In your own life?

How has the light of Jesus made choices and decisions more clear in your own daily walk?

Hebrews 4:12-16

12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. 13 No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked
and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus
the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we
are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.

How has God used the Word of God to test your faith?

How does knowing that Jesus has been test in EVERY way that you will ever be tested give
you encouragement and comfort? Or does it?

How can this passage help you when you face testing and trials?

Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.[a] 2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Knowing that no one is perfected in our flesh, do you still see evidence of transformation since you were redeemed?

If you’ve been born again for some time now, are you seeing current transformation?

How can you renew your mind daily to be more in turn with what God is doing in your life now?

2 Samuel 12:16 David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted, went home, and spent the night lying on the ground.

Discovered in sin, David becomes aware that his selfishness is not just affecting his life,
but that of his son. His response is to fast in repentance.

1. How do you react to your won sin? Is repentance a regular part of your acknowledgement of your own sinful nature?

2. What would it look like if you made giving up television, or your phone, or music, or food a regular part of your relationship with God to accept His forgiveness of your sins? These are not things we HAVE to do of course, Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross, but what if we prayerfully added fasting from something to our life to physically remind ourselves of the pain that can be caused by our sin?

3. What will you give up going forward in order to honor God? How can you incorporate fasting into your spiritual walk?
